UNICEF Germany awards annually "UNICEF Photo of the Year" to photos that impressively capture the lives and living conditions of children worldwide.

Milo has been talking to his parents and brother e Milo has been talking to his parents and brother ever since he learned to speak. Outside of the family, however, he fell completely silent. He was six years old when he was diagnosed with selective mutism, a presumably genetic, anxiety-induced inability to speak in any situation outside the comfort of his family home. Lively and talkative at home, the boy couldn’t utter a word as soon as he encountered other people.
An emergency situation that, according to estimates, can affect about one in a hundred children. Milo’s mother, Canadian-Mexican photographer Patricia Krivanek, for whom the diagnosis was as shocking as it was disturbing, thought about how she could build bridges for her son and help him open up. She gave him a simple camera to help him express his emotions and communicate through visual language. At the same time, she took photographs of him and asked him to write down his thoughts. 2024 UNICEF Photo of the Year, honorable mention

Sudan: The unnoticed tragedy
Far from the headlines, one of the greatest humanitarian disasters of our time is unfolding in Sudan. Eight million people, probably even more, are fleeing the front lines of a war that has been raging in the East African country since 2023. Around 730,000 children are so severely malnourished that their lives are in immediate danger. The warring parties are deliberately using hunger as a weapon by looting farmers, stealing animals and controlling water sources. Schools and health posts are being destroyed, children are being forcibly recruited to fight, and sexual violence against girls is widespread. Irish photographer Ivor Prickett aims to draw international attention to this tragedy by documenting the misery, malnutrition, displacement and despair in Sudan.
